Dangling Participles

March 5, 2019 By Broadtower Insurance

“Suggesting that Americans are unprepared for inevitable future emotional and financial turmoil falls into the cosmic understatement category. Only one in five have a will or any last directives. Just a little over half own any form of life insurance. We are lousy at saving, having an average of only $15,000 put aside. Yet we somehow continue to have faith that a leprechaun will appear at the end of life’s journey and provide financial sustenance for our marital partners, largesse and remembrance for our grandchildren, private rooms at five-star hospitals and beautiful Swedish nurses for our superior one-on-one care at home.

Fantasy is wonderful at a superhero movie. It has, however, always been a measure of your powers of persuasion that allows a small dose of reality to intrude and provide some attempt at planning ahead. Believing that your sales presentation succeeds based on your skills to illuminate financial risk suffers from the same hubris that allows consumers to boast that they bought insurance because they are simply wise and wholly committed to protect themselves and their loved ones. Forgive my skepticism!”

The Last Word On LTCI

February 5, 2019 By Broadtower Insurance

“Like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, we now live in a world of “combo” confections coming in all combinations of flavors, sizes and colors. Confusion, misunderstandings and frankly a potential abundance of experience disappointments, stand before us like a solid and forbidding rock candy mountain.

Some light has been recently shed on the mysteries and old wive’s tales frequently attributed to the two birds with one stone,  have your cake and eat it too aficionados. LIMRA, with the hard work of an SOA LTC Section Council member, has recently released a new combo life study helping clear the fog. The study is titled “Combination Products: A One-Stop Solution?” (full annotation at the end). I would not want to offend LIMRA by publishing any direct information in this column. Instead I will take my usual liberties to paraphrase, embellish and interpret my own personal observations from this excellent work.”

A Note From Mutual of Omaha LTC | Brent’s Bits January 2019 – Ready. Set. Go.

January 29, 2019 By Broadtower Insurance

From the desk of Brent DeGroot, Brokerage Health Sales Director for Mutual of Omaha.

Good Day,

Thank you for your business in 2018; and for making it another successful year here at Mutual of Omaha!

2019 has already started and we want to collaborate to make it an even better year for your office.

A couple positives to begin to begin the year:

  • We maintain our position as the leader in traditional LTCi industry.
  • The LTC13 (current) product block continues to perform as expected, and we again expect no changes in 2019. We want to earn your promotion and business.

I have included our Sales Idea Brochure; while it is not new, I review it every once in a while due to the many Sales Ideas it contains. From our Common Employer program (5% discount on approved groups), Shared Care for partners, or the Security Benefit for clients with a partner who may not qualify for coverage; the brochure outlines many of our product features which can be used to determine the correct coverage for clients.

Also included is the brochure for our first ever LTC Producer Incentive trip (travel in 2020) and our Marketing Credit program booklet.

All this is to help spur conversation and excitement with the producers you serve.  I know by working together, 2019 will be a successful year for all of us!

GWG Endorses Federal Legislation Allowing Seniors to Use Life Insurance Proceeds for Long-Term Care Costs Tax-Free

January 15, 2019 By Broadtower Insurance

Potential Law Would Save Billions for Taxpayers, Improve Quality of Life for Millions of Seniors

H.R. 7203, introduced by U.S. Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-TX) and U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY) would permit seniors, regardless of their health status, to use life insurance policies they already own to fund a wide range of health care costs, including long-term care expenses and long-term care insurance premiums.

“I am thrilled to see the concept we have pioneered being put into legislation,” said GWG Life Executive Vice President Chris Orestis. “Seniors who have felt they had no choice but to lapse a life insurance policy to qualify for Medicaid now have an option that can improve their lives in their final years. This is an important step toward finding solutions to the long-term care crisis this country faces.”

Supporters of H.R. 7203 believe it has widespread, bipartisan support as a solution to the growing cost of senior care in the country that cuts the costs of a massive taxpayer-financed government program. The bill has been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee on which Marchant and Higgins serve.

Confusion

January 8, 2019 By Broadtower Insurance

“Recently an industry publication offered a headline that even State Regulators were confused about regarding chronic illness combo/hybrid policy offerings. That same confusion is rampant through the ranks of all concerned. As has been suggested previously in this column, there is little if any consensus on the balance of pricing assumptions.

We do seem to have come to  understand that mortality and morbidity are both at play in one financial instrument. Some early SPWL product  with limited chronic illness riders were based solely on mortality. Furthermore, it is accepted that premium, underwriting and administration expenses must be considered for either contingency.

The persistent low interest environment has seemed to help point the market in the direction of the intrinsic value of whole life promises guaranteeing premium and predictable benefit.”

Immediate Need Annuity Distribution Strategy Change From Genworth

December 11, 2018 By Broadtower Insurance

A note from the desk of Shawn Davis, Head of Individual Sales US Life Insurance Companies at Genworth.

As we enter 2019, we are continuing our efforts in developing a market for the Income Assurance Immediate Need Annuity (INA) product. INA is a medically underwritten single premium immediate annuity issued by Genworth Life Insurance Company (Genworth Life.) Over the past 3 years, we have not been able to develop this market through the Brokerage General Agency (BGA) channel. Many efforts were made by our wholesaling team partnering with BGAs to drive sales. Unfortunately, this didn’t generate enough traction for us to continue with this model as part of our 2019 strategy.

In 2019, we are going to deploy a different distribution strategy that affects our BGA model. Beginning December 3, 2018, we will only offer INA as a producer direct opportunity, specifically meaning any producer wanting to offer INA to their clients will need to be contracted directly with Genworth Life. We are making this change to offer producers a higher commission rate of 5% to sell the product. We will notify all producers engaged in the marketing and selling of INA of this change. Any business submitted prior to November 30, 2018 under your BGA hierarchy will be attributed to you in that structure. After this date, the producer will need to have a direct relationship with Genworth Life for INA, and you will not receive compensation.

I realize this change in distribution strategy has an impact on our BGA partners. Please know the decision was not made lightly and is based in part on the feedback we have received that the current compensation structure is not properly aligned given the duration and complexity of the sales process for this product. We believe this is the right decision to make at this time and will help to accelerate the market opportunity for this product.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and support.
